Sustainable Fashion
We’re all a work in progress. Learning and growing as we go.
Something is better than nothing. Small changes add up.
Sustainability, it’s a journey.
Ready to start yours?
WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE FASHION?
It’s a movement that brings more transparency and circularity to the fashion industry.
This means treating our fellow humans and the environment fairly.
And it means designing clothes with the next use in mind.
In a sustainable system, garments are circulated for as long as they’re useful and valuable before being returned safely to the biosphere.

WHY AM I ONLY JUST HEARING ABOUT THIS?
Fast fashion is the second most polluting industry in the world. How has this escaped the headlines for so long?
Unfortunately, fashion consumption is fairly irrational. We don’t often make decisions based on the cost to ourselves or the environment. Instead, fashion is a social activity closely linked to excitement and other emotional and aspirational desires.
When we’re emotionally motivated, we’re less likely to think through the ethical and environmental consequences
But, when you love something, why not make it an agent of change?
I’M IN. HOW CAN I DRESS MORE SUSTAINABILITY?
We’re glad you asked
Rent couture, rather than buy. We can help with that.
Create a capsule wardrobe. Time to get minimalist. Decide on a timeless workday and weekend uniform and stick to it (well, if it works for Obama…)
Buy fewer and better. Invest in good quality clothes. Then you’ll get to dress in a favourite piece each and every day.
Seek out second hand. We love What Comes Around Goes Around, Vestiaire Collective and The Real Real for some absolute steals (pro-tip, search for the brands you love from the comfort of your couch). Your local vintage stores (remember Telling time Vintage) and op shops will also be full of good finds if you’re keen to head offline to thrift.
Reuse. Borrow from friends. Or make a vow to buy #nonewclothes for a while.
OK, WHAT TOOLS SHOULD I USE FOR RESEARCH?
If you’re interested in knowing more about the brands in your wardrobe, this Fashion Footprint Calculator should be your first port of call. Prepare to learn some uncomfortable but necessary truths.
Good On You is also an amazing resource for doing a lil background research on brands before you buy. There’s even a handy app for when you’re next shopping girl.
NICE! AND WHAT SUSTAINABLE BRANDS SHOULD I LOOK OUT FOR?
There’s a common misconception that sustainable advocates are all scruffy hippies. It’s high time we changed that perspective.
There are so many sustainable fashion gods out there doing their best to implement circularity, transparency and reducing waste with minimal collections.
This lot creates a better world for us while they keep us looking fabulous. What’s not to love?
